Are Mormons Christian?
The question of whether Mormons are Christians is not simply about self-identification, but about core beliefs. While Mormons call themselves Christians, their founder Joseph Smith made statements that set the Latter-day Saints apart from historic Christianity. Smith claimed that all existing Christian creeds were an “abomination” to God and that the true church needed to be restored through him. This is in stark contrast to Jesus’ promise in Matthew 16:18 that His church would never be overcome.

Historic Christianity is defined by foundational doctrines: belief in one true God, the Trinity, the full divinity and humanity of Jesus, salvation by grace through faith, and the authority of the Bible. Mormonism rejects or redefines each of these, except for the bodily resurrection of Jesus—though even here, their understanding of Jesus differs from the biblical account.

Historic Christianity can show these foundational doctrines taught by Early Christian writers starting from the 1st Century. Mormonism on the other hand can only trace their doctrines back to the 1800’s. For a Church to be restored it must first exist. All evidence points to Mormonism being a brand-new religion started by Joseph Smith. The claim that the church disappeared and needed restoration is unsupported by history and the writings of the early church.
Mormonism’s own scriptures and leaders have declared all other churches to be false, and their teachings about God, Jesus, and salvation are fundamentally different from those of biblical Christianity. Calling a German Shepherd “Kitty” does not make it a cat; likewise, using the name of Jesus does not make a group Christian if it denies the essential truths He and His apostles taught.
As Christians, we are called to speak the truth in love—not out of animosity, but out of concern for those who may be led astray. The facts show that Mormonism is not Christianity in the historic, biblical sense. True Christian faith is rooted in the unchanging gospel delivered once for all to the saints (Jude 1:3).
