Do All Miracles Come from God?

Many people point to miraculous experiences as proof of their faith or the truth of a particular church. However, the Bible warns us not to base our beliefs solely on miracles or personal experiences. Instead, we are called to interpret our experiences in light of Scripture.

The Bible clearly teaches that not all miracles come from God. In 1 John 4:1-3, believers are urged to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God,” because many false prophets are in the world. The key test is what is taught about Jesus Christ—specifically, that He is God come in the flesh. Any spirit or teaching that denies this is not from God, no matter how miraculous the signs may seem.

Scripture also shows that Satan can perform signs and wonders to deceive. In Deuteronomy 13:1-5, God warns that even if a sign or wonder comes true, if it leads people away from Him, it is not from God. Jesus Himself warned in Matthew 24:24 that “false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.” Other passages (such as 2 Thessalonians 2:8-9 and Revelation 13:12-14) describe how Satan and his agents can perform “false wonders” to lead people astray.

Therefore, Christians must not accept every miracle as evidence of God’s approval. Instead, we must test every spirit and teaching by the truth of God’s Word. Only those miracles that point to the true Jesus Christ and align with Scripture are from God. In all things, the Bible—not personal experience—must be our final authority.
