Is It Important What a Church Teaches?
Absolutely—it is vital to care about what a church teaches. The Bible repeatedly warns us that not every message or teacher is from God, even if they seem sincere or perform miracles. In Galatians 1:8-9, Paul says that anyone—even an angel—who preaches a different gospel is to be accursed. This shows how seriously God takes the truth of His message.
Deuteronomy 13:1-5 warns that even if a prophet performs signs but leads people to other gods, we must not listen. God tests our loyalty by seeing if we will cling to His truth, not just follow impressive leaders. Similarly, Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:3-15 warns that false teachers can appear as servants of righteousness, just as Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Their teachings may sound good, but if they preach “another Jesus” or a different gospel, they are leading people astray.
Peter also warns in 2 Peter 2:1 that false teachers will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying Jesus Himself. Jesus, in John 8:23-25, insists that unless we believe the truth about who He is, we will die in our sins. Proverbs 14:12 reminds us that what seems right to us can actually lead to death if it is not grounded in God’s truth.
In summary, what a church teaches about God and Jesus matters deeply. If a church’s teachings do not align with the Bible, we should not support or attend it. Our beliefs must be shaped by Scripture, not by tradition, emotion, or popular opinion. The Bible is our ultimate authority—if it disagrees with us, it is we who must change, not God’s Word.
