A Different God

The Watchtower denies the Trinity thus rejecting the God of the Bible.

The doctrine of the Trinity is often misunderstood and misrepresented, especially by groups like Jehovah’s Witnesses, who claim that Christians believe in three gods or that the Trinity is a later invention not found in Scripture. However, historic Christianity has always affirmed that there is only one God, who exists eternally as three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is not a contradiction, but a mystery revealed in the Bible.

Scripture consistently teaches the unity and plurality of God. The Father is called God (Romans 1:7), the Son is called God (John 1:1, 14; John 20:28), and the Holy Spirit is called God (Acts 5:3-4). Yet the Bible clearly teaches there is only one God (Isaiah 44:8) All three are involved in creation (Genesis 1:2; John 1:3; Colossians 1:16), and all three are present at key moments, such as Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:16-17) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19). The Old Testament hints at this plurality (Genesis 1:26; Isaiah 48:16), while the New Testament makes it explicit.

Jehovah’s Witnesses argue that the word “Trinity” is not in the Bible and that the doctrine is confusing. Yet, Christians use many terms not found in Scripture (like “omnipotent”) to describe biblical truths. The real question is not whether the word appears, but whether the concept is taught. The Bible affirms that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are each fully God, yet there is only one God (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 44:6-8).

The Watchtower claims the Trinity was invented in the fourth century, but early Christians taught and believed this doctrine they just did not use the term Trinity to name a doctrine which they believed. The complexity of God should not surprise us—His nature is beyond full human comprehension, but He has revealed Himself as triune. Christians believe in the Trinity not because it is easy to understand, but because it is what the Bible teaches. To deny the Trinity is to deny the fullness of God’s self-revelation in Scripture.
