Marriage for Eternity and Polygamy
The doctrine of eternal marriage and polygamy, as taught by early Mormon leaders, stands in stark contrast to the teachings of the Bible. While some Old Testament figures practiced polygamy, Scripture never condones or commands it. In fact, the New Testament is clear: church leaders are to be “the husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2, 12; Titus 1:5-7). Jesus Himself indicated that there is no marriage in afterlife, saying, “In the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven” (Matthew 22:30).
The Book of Mormon and Doctrine & Covenants, both considered scripture by Latter-day Saints, contradict each other on this issue. The Book of Mormon condemns the polygamy of David and Solomon (Jacob 2:23-24), while Doctrine & Covenants 132 claims God gave them many wives. Furthermore, the Bible never records God commanding Abraham to take Hagar as a wife as Mormons claim; rather, it was a result of human decision and led to sin (Genesis 16:2, 5).
Paul, too, affirms that singleness can be a blessing, allowing greater devotion to the Lord
(1 Corinthians 7:8, 32-33). There is a strong contrast between this the statement by Brigham Young. The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy." Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, pg. 268-269
Nowhere do the apostles or early church leaders practice or promote polygamy. When extra-biblical revelations contradict the clear teaching of Scripture, Christians are called to stand on the unchanging Word of God. The Bible alone is the trustworthy foundation for faith and practice, and its truth endures every test.
