Should a Christian Be a Mason?

Many view Freemasonry as a harmless social group, and some even assume it is compatible with Christianity because it requires belief in God and includes the Bible in its rituals. However, a closer look at authoritative Masonic writings reveals significant differences between Masonic beliefs and biblical Christianity. Masonic authorities such as Albert Pike and Albert Mackey openly describe Freemasonry as a religious institution, not merely a fraternity. Pike admits that lower-level Masons are intentionally misled about the true nature of the organization, which is contrary to the biblical command to speak truthfully (Proverbs 6:16-17).

Masonry claims to embrace all religions, teaching that its “universal, eternal, immutable religion” is the foundation for all faiths. The Bible, in Masonic practice, is treated as one sacred book among many, used only for ritual oaths, not as the unique, inspired Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16). In contrast, Jesus taught openly and rejected secretive teachings (John 18:20), while Masonry is built on secrecy and hidden knowledge.

Most importantly, Masonry teaches that salvation or “divine truth” is attained by personal effort and moral character, echoing ancient pagan beliefs. This stands in direct opposition to the gospel, which proclaims salvation as a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6). Masonry’s view of Jesus as merely one of many great moral teachers denies His unique role as Savior and Lord.

While many Masons are good people, and some may be unaware of these deeper teachings, Christians are called to test all things by Scripture. The Bible warns against being “unequally yoked” with unbelief (2 Corinthians 6:14-17) and calls believers to contend for the faith (Jude 1:3). In light of these clear differences, a Christian must carefully consider whether participation in Freemasonry is compatible with following Christ.
