A Christian Response to Early Mormon Claims

Christianity stands on the unchanging truth of Scripture. Some early Mormon leaders made claims that diverge sharply from biblical teaching, such as the assertion that Jesus was married or even a polygamist. Yet, the Bible clearly states Jesus was merely a guest at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-2), and nowhere suggests He was married.
Other early Mormon teachings, such as God created the world with the help of a council of gods, also contradict the Bible. Scripture affirms that God alone created all things (Isaiah 44:24.
Racial teachings once taught by Brigham Young a Mormon prophet claiming the Law of God was death on the spot if a white person had relations with a negro, are directly refuted by the New Testament, which proclaims that in Christ there is no distinction between Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female (Galatians 3:28).
Furthermore, the early Mormon doctrine of “blood atonement”—that some sins require the shedding of one’s own blood—undermines the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice. The Bible teaches that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7); no further sacrifice is needed.
Finally, while some Mormon leaders have reinterpreted the fall of Adam as a positive event, the Bible is clear that Adam’s disobedience was sin, bringing death to all (Romans 5:12-15). Yet, through Christ, grace and life are offered to all who believe.
In summary, the core of Christian apologetics is to point back to the authority and sufficiency of Scripture, the uniqueness of Christ, and the universality of the gospel. Any teaching that departs from these truths must be lovingly but firmly rejected in favor of the clear testimony of God’s Word.
