No other Gods

A central claim of Mormonism is that “As man is God once was, as God is man may become,” suggesting that humans can become gods and that there are many gods. However, a careful reading of the Bible reveals a consistent and emphatic message: there is only one true God.

Scripture repeatedly affirms there is only one God. In Isaiah 44:8, God declares, “Is there any God besides me, or is there any other Rock? I know of none.” Similarly, Deuteronomy 4:35 states, “The LORD, He is God; there is no other besides Him.” These and many other passages (Isaiah 43:10, 45:5-6; 1 Samuel 2:2) make it clear that God alone is eternal, all-powerful, and worthy of worship.

Some point to verses like 1 Corinthians 8:5, which mentions “many gods and many lords,” or John 10:34, where Jesus refers to men as “gods.” Yet, the context shows these are references to idols or human judges, not actual deities. Paul clarifies, “for us there is but one God, the Father… and one Lord, Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 8:6). Jesus’ use of “gods” in John 10:34 quotes Psalm 82, where unjust human judges are metaphorically called “gods” because of their authority, not their divinity.
Even the Book of Mormon, in Alma 11:28-29, affirms, “Is there more than one God? And he answered, No.” Thus, both the Bible and, ironically, Mormon scripture, testify that there is only one God.
The idea that man can become God, or that there are many gods, is not supported by Scripture. God Himself says, “Before me there was no God formed, and there will be none after me” (Isaiah 43:10). The Christian faith stands firmly on the truth that there is one God, eternally existent, who alone is worthy of our worship and trust.
