Watchtower Literature is it trustworthy?

Christianity has always encouraged believers to study the Scriptures personally and to seek guidance from the Holy Spirit, as the Bible itself instructs (Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; John 14:26). However, the Watchtower organization (Jehovah’s Witnesses) teaches that individuals cannot understand the Bible apart from their literature and authority, discouraging independent study and critical thinking. Ironically they even claimed that if you read the Bible alone you will reject their doctrine and believe Christian doctrine instead. The Watchtower stance is not only contrary to biblical teaching but also raises concerns about the reliability of their claims.

The Watchtower asserts that only their organization is directed by God’s spirit and that salvation depends on belonging to them. They claim that early Christians did not believe in the Trinity, supposedly citing early church fathers and give no references. However, a closer look at the writings of Ignatius, Tertullian, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Hippolytus, and Origen reveals that the core elements of the Trinity and the divinity of Christ were indeed taught well before the fourth century contrary to what the Watchtower said.

The Trinity can be shown in early writings well before this. For example, Ignatius (c. 90 AD) spoke of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as “possessed of equal honour,” and Tertullian (c. 200 AD) described the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as “three coherent Persons, who are yet distinct One from Another…one essence, not one Person.”

The Watchtower’s misrepresentation of historical sources undermines their claim to be a trustworthy guide to biblical truth. Christians are therefore encouraged to read the Bible for themselves, compare teachings, and test all things (1 Thessalonians 5:21). True faith is not based on organizational authority, but on a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit and the clear teaching of Scripture.
